Southport, NC is located in Brunswick County, North Carolina. It is situated near the mouth of the Cape Fear River, and it has a population of approximately 2,400. This town is the location for the filming of popular TV shows and movies, including I Know What You Did Last Summer, Dawson’s Creek, and A Walk to Remember. Southport is part of a humid subtropical climate that is characterized by mild winters, lengthy springs, and hot and humid summer months.
The history of Southport dates back to the early 1500s when the area was first surveyed by Spanish explorers. Fort Johnson was built in 1748, and Southport then began to develop around it with the original name of Smithville. Smithville was later renamed Southport in 1887, and it served as the county seat for Brunswick County from 1808 to 1977.
In addition to Fort Johnson, there are a number of other attractions in the area. The Robert Ruark Inn is located in the city, and is a popular historical North Carolina Bed and Breakfast. The Franklin Square Gallery is also popular for art enthusiasts, and visitors can view exhibits and participate in workshops. The North Carolina Maritime Museum is also located in Southport, with other branches being found in Beaufort and Hatteras.
